Development Training: Speed Development
Training is an in depth speed development training
program designed to increase acceleration and
top speed for linear running as well as increase
agility for sports requiring lateral movement.
Emphasis on form and injury prevention is the
cornerstone of this program. Training even includes
a component of mental preparation which is essential
for all sports!
Speed training is an essential component to increasing overall athletic ability. It is however, important to understand what is meant by the broad term of speed training. Under this umbrella exists four main terms: linear speed, acceleration, deceleration, and lateral speed (or agility). Linear speed is generally referred to as straight ahead speed or straight line speed. Acceleration is referred to as any increase in speed whether from a complete stand still or after a change of direction. Deceleration is a commonly ignored training protocol because it does not have the glitz and glam of the other methods. Unfortunately those who ignore it often pay for it in the form of injury. Deceleration is all about landing and stopping properly to decrease stress on the joints and increase movement efficiency. Lateral speed or agility is any movement that requires changing direction or moving laterally. Agility training is often just seen as doing movement drills with cones; however, if an athlete does not have proper mechanics and technique he is just reinforcing that bad technique by repeating these drills over and over. Just as all sports skills must be broken down and practiced until technique is perfect, so must the methods of speed and agility be broken down until running, cutting, landing, and stopping are mastered. By continually increasing efficiency in all of the categories of speed training the athlete will notice the same increase of efficiency and speed in all sports skills, especially the all important game speed.
